Heathrow – At a glance

Heathrow Airport located in Hillingdon, Greater London, is considered one of the busiest public airports. Every year, more than 80 million passengers are served and more than 80 flights travel to many locations around the world.

Aviation units and other general defence units of the Metropolitan Police, such as drone detection, ensure the security of Heathrow Airport. Other facilities include access to the hotel, other modes of travel and prayer rooms. Heathrow Airport has four passenger terminals, plus one freight terminal and transportation between terminals.

Heathrow – A look back at the history

The existence of Heathrow Airport stretches to the year 1930. This was the year that Richard Fairey, a British aero engineer and aircraft builder, bought a 150-acre plot from the Vicar of Harmondsworth. The Great West Aerodrome of Fairey, where aircraft were checked and assembled, was then called this airport.

This estate was confiscated by the government during World War II, along with other property around this plot. This land was used to build a troop-carrying aircraft base, RAF Heston.

This RAF Heston base was no longer needed right after the war ended, and was therefore effectively turned over to the Air Ministry. This was when it formally became London’s civil airport on 1 January 1946.

A converted Lancaster bomber became the first aeroplane to ever fly off from Heathrow, which was known as Starlight. In 1951, the amount of traffic was increased to over 700,000, passengers and substantial buildings around the airport were designed and constructed. Initially, it was called London Airport, and in 1966 it was renamed Heathrow Airport. As many as 1 billion passengers were handled by the year 2006.

A variety of upgrades have been made since then and the airport has made changes to its operations, services and designs.  Today, Heathrow Airport is one of the busiest international airports, serving millions of individuals per year across the world.
