Heathrow – At a glance

Known as one of the busiest airports by passenger traffic, Heathrow Airport is a public airport in Hillingdon, Greater London. Over 80 million passengers are being served every year and over 80 airplanes fly to many destinations around the world.

The security of Heathrow Airport is maintained by aviation units of the Metropolitan Police, and other general security like drone detection. Some of the facilities include hotel access, transportation, prayer rooms, etc.

Heathrow Airport has four passenger terminals, plus one cargo terminal and has inter-terminal transportation.

Heathrow – A look back at the history

The history of Heathrow Airport goes back to the year 1930. This is the year when Richard Fairey, a British aero engineer, and aircraft builder bought a plot of 150-acre from Vicar of Harmondsworth. This plot was then named Fairey’s Great West Aerodrome where aircraft were tested and assembled.

During World War II, this land was requisitioned by the government, along with other lands around this plot. They used this land to build RAF Heston, a base for troop-carrying aircraft.

Right after the war ended, this RAF Heston base was not needed anymore and hence was officially handed over to the Air Ministry. This was on 1st January of 1946 when it officially became London’s civil airport

A converted Lancaster bomber was the first aircraft to ever take off from Heathrow, which was known as Starlight. In the year 1951, the passenger number was increased to over 700,000, and permanent buildings around the airport were designed and constructed. Previously, it was named London Airport, and in 1966, it was renamed Heathrow Airport. As much as 1 billion passengers were served by the year 2006.

A lot of changes took place since then, and the airport has made changes in its operations, services, designs, etc. Today Heathrow Airport is a major international airport serving millions of people every year, all over the world.
