Cambridge Summary

Cambridge is more widely regarded as a university town and is also the governing hub of the Cambridge district. Situated roughly 50 miles north of Cambridge, London is the heart of the high-tech center of silicon fen. Cambridge is the most popular university in Cambridge, with well-known locations including the Cavendish Lab, the King’s College Chapel, and the University Library. As per the census conducted in 2001, Cambridge has a population of 108,863 people, of which more than 22,000 are students.

Cambridge History

Settlements have developed in this region of East Anglia since the Roman Empire. The first confirmation is a 3,500-year-old farmhouse found at the Fitzwilliam College location. The first significant invention of Cambridge took place during the Roman invasion in 40AD. The castle hill was used as a military outpost to protect against the river Cam. The Saxons took control after the Romans had fled. During this time, Cambridge gained from strong trading ties through the hard-to-travel Fenland. When the Vikings landed, Cambridge expanded quickly owing to their robust trade. During this time, the core of Cambridge had shifted from the hill of the castle to the right bank of the river named Quayside.

How the University launched

In 1209, students left Oxford and founded a university in Cambridge. The oldest extant college is Peterhouse, which was founded in 1284. In 1534, a printing license was given to Cambridge University Press. Hobson’s Conduit was the first scheme to carry safe drinking water to the city center that was established in 1610, and some of it still exists today. Addenbrooke Hospital was established in 1766. While possessing a Cambridge university, the City Charter was not granted until 1951.

Today’s Cambridge

In the 1960s-1970s, the city’s potential was significantly expanded by a range of broad council estates that we’re preparing to overshoot London. Now Cambridge is one of the largest settlements of East Anglia.

Theater

The biggest theater in Cambridge is the Arts Theater, a location of 666 seats in the city center. The theater also has tour presentations, as do local businesses. There are still several amateur theater clubs in Cambridge, sometimes performing very high-quality productions. The ADC Theater is owned by the University of Cambridge, which normally has three shows a week in length.
