Heathrow History
The major international airport Heathrow was first founded in the year 1930 as an aircraft testing base. This base was built over a 150-acre plot which was previously owned by the Vicar of Harmondsworth. He then sold it to British aero engineer and aircraft builder Richard Fairey for £15,000. Fairey used it to make the base and named it Fairey’s Great West Aerodrome.
When World War II started, this land was amongst the other surrounding land, which was ordered by the government. The government used this land to build an RAF Heston base for troop-carrying aircraft.
At the end of the war, the base was handed over to the Air Ministry on 1st January 1946 as London’s new civil airport. In 1951, Heathrow Airport experienced a rise of over 700,000 passengers. In the same year, British architect Frederick Gibberd built the terminals and central area buildings. He is also the one to design the original control tower and the multi-faith chapel of St George’s.
