Heathrow History
Once Heathrow Airport was known as Fairey’s Great West Aerodrome, which is the first name it got after a 150-acre plot was bought and used for testing and assembling aircraft. This plot was owned by the Vicar of Harmondsworth at first, which he then sold to British aero engineer and aircraft builder Richard Fairey.
However, when World War II was going on, this land and surrounding parts were requisitioned by the government, which they used to build RAF Heston base for troop-carrying aircraft.
This was then handed over to the Air Ministry by the end of the war, considering it was no longer needed. It was on the very first day of the year 1946 that the base was officially recognised as London’s civil airport.
The first aeroplane to ever take off from this base was Starlight, which is a converted Lancaster bomber called Starlight was first to fly off from this new civil airport.
In the year 1951, the airport base, which was then called London Airport, took a step forward to becoming what we call today Heathrow Airport. In this year, the number of passengers has risen over 700,000 and permanent buildings around the airport were designed by Frederick Gibberd.
