Heathrow History

Prior to what we call today the Heathrow Airport, it was a mere 150-acre plot owned by the Vicar of Harmondsworth. This land was then bought by a British aero engineer and aircraft builder Richard Fairey for a sum of £15,000. Fairey used this plot to test and assemble aircraft, which he named Fairey’s Great West Aerodrome.

This land and the surrounding land were however requisitioned by the government during World War II and were used to build RAF Heston, a base for troop-carrying aircraft.

By the end of World War II, the RAF Heston base was not needed anymore, and it was officially handed over to the Air Ministry on 1st January 1946 as the new London’s civil airport. A converted Lancaster bomber called Starlight was first to fly off from this new civil airport.

The year 1951 marks a significant year in the history of Heathrow, as it was when the passenger number has risen over 700,000, and British architect Frederick Gibberd worked on designing the airport’s permanent buildings. Heathrow has gone through years of continuous changes to become today a major international airport serving millions and millions of people over the world.
