A little about Heathrow
Heathrow airport, previously known as London Airport, is easily one of the busiest airports in London, considering it has an influx of approximately 72 million passengers every year. It also has 80 airlines operating in it, which means that the passengers arriving at and leaving from the Heathrow airport are coming from all over the continent as well as the world.
Despite being so busy already, the size and capacity of the Heathrow airport are only growing. There are 6 other airports which, along with the Heathrow Airport, serve as the main hub of air travels in London. These include Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Southend and London City.
The History
The Airport has been functioning from the 25th of March of 1946, although it only got the name it has now -Heathrow Airport in 1966. The land where the Heathrow Airport stands now was first an agriculture land acquired to build a base for The Air force during World War II. However, by the time the war was ended, RAF no longer needed a base so the structure was bequeathed to the Air Ministry of London which they converted it to London’s first civil airport.
By the end of the first year of the airport in operation, 63,000 passengers had flown from it to various parts of the country and the world. Ever since it first opened, the airport has been heavily used and busy. Heathrow Airport recently celebrated its 74th anniversary.
